Makalié is a young, artisan winery established in 2019 by Max Frölich and Karoline Linka in Müllheim, Baden (Markgräflerland), Germany. Both Geisenheim-trained and seasoned in natural wine practices from France and Austria, they cultivate a mix of hand-farmed and biodynamically managed vineyards on diverse steep sites—including limestone, marl, loess, clay, and volcanic soils.
Working with grapes like Gutedel (Chasselas), Weißburgunder, Chardonnay, and Spätburgunder, they focus on spontaneous fermentation, extended aging in used Burgundian barrels and amphorae, minimal sulphur additions, and no fining or filtration. Their wines are praised for being pure, precise, vibrant, and terroir-driven—an impressive feat given their small-scale production of just a few hundred bottles per cuvée.
In essence, Makalié exemplifies the essence of natural wine in Baden: small-batch, thoughtfully crafted, and deeply rooted in earth-connected philosophy—true to the meaning of their name, derived from “Maka” (earth) and “lié” (connected).
