2Naturkinder

Franken, Germany

With backgrounds in Judaic studies and philosophy, Melanie and Michael spent several years working for scientific publishers in Germany and the United Kingdom before returning to the family winery founded in 1843. With the vintage of 2013, 2Naturkinder was born. Enthralled by the straightforwardness of the wines they had discovered in previous years, the goal from the outset was to produce wine as puristically as possible. A wine full of life, not full of expectations. One that expresses the land, the vintage, the people, and the grape variety in a way the region had not yet experienced.

In the cellars, minimal intervention is the mantra. 2naturkinder's winemakers skillfully guide the transformation from grape to bottle, allowing the intrinsic qualities of the fruit and terroir to shine. The result is a portfolio of natural wines that encapsulate the essence of Franconia, characterized by purity, depth, and a genuine connection to the land.
They eschew the use of any additives throughout the winemaking process, including sulfites, which provides them with the most direct feedback from their land. However, this also means embracing unpredictable developments. Managing the unexpected is a central challenge in the production of truly natural wine.

Their wines mature in their old wine cellar for at least a year, often longer, predominantly in oak, ranging from used barriques to large casks and double pieces. Each time they taste a barrel, they reflect on the vineyard, what went well in that year, and what could be improved in the next. This way, the wines remain connected to the vines, and the cellar to the soil.
