Domaine de la Sœur Cadette
Burgundy, France
Domaine de la Sœur Cadette is a pioneering organic estate based in Vézelay in the northern reaches of Burgundy, founded by the Montanet family in 1987 and now led in the cellar by Valentin Montanet. The domaine’s work was instrumental in the revival of Vézelay’s vineyards, with extensive replanting of hillside parcels and an early commitment to certified organic viticulture and low-input cellar work. Farming emphasizes ploughing and hoeing rather than synthetic herbicides, with hand-harvesting and careful selection in the vineyards. In the winery, fermentations proceed with indigenous yeasts, without chaptalization and with minimal sulphur, aiming for wines that transparently transmit their limestone-rich terroirs. Stylistically, Sœur Cadette’s wines are known for their saline minerality, clarity and drinkability, placing them among reference producers for natural-leaning Burgundy from Vézelay and surrounding areas.
