Altura

Altura is a natural wine estate on Isola del Giglio, a rugged granite island off the Tuscan coast. Founded by Francesco Carfagna, the estate spans 3.5 hectares of terraced, cliffside vineyards overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Carfagna family lives in a converted windmill, with their small cellar located in the basement. They revived the native Ansonaco grape, alongside red varieties like Sangiovese and Grenache, cultivating them organically (though not certified) on granite soils. Winemaking is minimalist: long macerations, native yeast fermentations, and minimal sulfur additions. The wines are known for their textural richness, mineral complexity, and expressive island character.
