Brendan Stater‑West

Loire, France

Brendan Stater‑West is an American‑born vigneron based in Bizay, in the Saumur appellation of the Loire Valley, where he focuses primarily on Chenin Blanc and some Cabernet Franc. Originally from Oregon, he moved to Paris as an English teacher, fell deeply in love with wine through tastings in the city’s bar‑à‑vins, and eventually relocated to Saumur to apprentice with renowned winemaker Romain Guiberteau. Under Guiberteau’s mentorship he learned meticulous organic viticulture and low‑intervention cellar work, emphasizing indigenous yeasts, careful lees handling, and restrained sulphur use to preserve terroir expression. In 2015 he released his first own label from the tuffeau‑limestone site Les Chapaudaises, whose vertical, saline profile has become a signature of his precise, mineral Saumur Blancs. His wines are known for their tension, clarity and quietly serious, almost Burgundian approach to Chenin.
