Chartogne-Taillet is a grower Champagne house based in Merfy, on the northern edge of the Montagne de Reims, run today by Alexandre Chartogne, who took over the family domaine in the early 2000s and, mentored by Anselme Selosse, reshaped it around a fierce belief in terroir. The estate farms its vineyards organically and biodynamically, ploughing with horses to protect the soil, and treats each plot, from sandy, iron-rich Thanetian outcrops to chalk, as a distinct expression rather than raw material for blending. Wines are largely single-vineyard or single-parcel cuvées, hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts, often in old oak barrels and foudres, with low dosages that let the underlying soil and site speak clearly. The result has made Chartogne-Taillet one of the most quietly influential names in grower Champagne, prized for wines that are precise, saline and unmistakably of their specific patch of ground rather than a house style.
