Leon Gold
Baden, Germany
Leon Gold is a first-generation winemaker in Weinstadt-Gundelsbach, Remstal, Württemberg, Germany, where he founded his 10-12 hectare estate in 2015 after training as a viticulture and oenology technician at Weinsberg Institute. Fascinated by vines since childhood, his path took him through biodynamic wineries in Bottwartal, Remstal, and South Palatinate, shaping his commitment to certified organic farming since 2016, with biodynamic practices, compost preparations, moon-phase timing, and no synthetic agents. Vines up to 45-50 years old grow on diverse Keuper soils—gypsum keuper, siliceous/red sandstone, colorful marl—yielding textured, mineral-driven wines.
In the cellar, Gold emphasizes minimal intervention: hand-harvest, native yeasts, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel, wood (barriques, tonneaux, halbstück), little to no fining/filtering, and low sulfur. His portfolio spans VDP-classified Gutsweine (daily drinkers), Ortsweine, and top Lagenweine/Reserve, featuring Riesling (his “queen”), Chardonnay, Grau/Weissburgunder, Trollinger, Lemberger, Spätburgunder, plus Sauvignon Blanc, Kerner, Portugieser, and blends like Weißes/Rotgold cuvées. Standouts include juicy pet-nats, rosés, and complex reds/whites with awards from Falstaff, Gault&Millau (e.g., 92+ points for Chardonnays, Rieslings). Gold also crafts alcohol-free Trauben Secco and hosts events, producing ~150,000 bottles yearly of vibrant, terroir-expressive wines.
