Matthias Warnung: A Natural Winemaker in the Kamptal Valley
Matthias Warnung, based in the Kamptal region of Austria, is a dynamic figure in the world of natural winemaking. Having grown up on his family's winery, Matthias took over the operation in 2010. His journey has been marked by significant experiences working with renowned natural winemakers like Craig Hawkins of Testalonga in South Africa and Tom Lubbe of Matassa in the Roussillon, which deeply influenced his approach to viticulture and enology.
Biodynamic and Minimal Intervention Practices
Matthias farms 10 hectares of vineyards primarily planted with Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Zweigelt, Chardonnay, and Müller-Thurgau. His winemaking philosophy revolves around organic farming and minimal intervention. All wines are spontaneously fermented with indigenous yeasts, unfiltered, and bottled with minimal sulfur. The estate, including its 500-year-old cellar, reflects his commitment to maintaining traditional methods while embracing sustainable practices.
