Quinta da Costa do Pinhão is a seventh-generation family estate in the Douro Valley, run by Miguel Morais, a mild-mannered, humble presence whose quiet approach mirrors the wines themselves. The property spans 24 biodiverse hectares near Pinhão, 17 of them under vine, farmed organically and herbicide-free since 2019, with many parcels holding vines over 40 years old rooted in fractured schist at altitudes between 300 and 450 metres. Morais works alongside acclaimed winemaker Luís Seabra, and together they favour a genuinely minimalist style: ambient yeast fermentations, gravity-flow handling in a nineteenth-century winery, ageing in old stone lagares and large oak barrels, and a deliberate refusal to over-extract or overwork the fruit. The estate also tends more than twenty-five native Portuguese varieties, a small act of preservation in a region often chasing ripeness and power. The result is a range of tiny-production cuvées built for elegance, freshness and a genuine sense of place.
