Uroš Rojac
,
Uroš Rojac is the dynamic third-generation winemaker at his family’s historic Rojac estate in Gažon, Slovenian Istria, continuing a 19th-century legacy of traditional winemaking. Nicknamed the “wild child” of his late father Bruno—a pioneering figure who professionalized the winery in the 1990s—Uroš studied at Ljubljana’s Bio-technical Faculty, where his controversial Refošk thesis stirred debate.
After Bruno’s sudden death in 2005, Uroš resiliently took over 15 hectares of terraced vineyards on flysch (sandy-marly) soils at 200-250m altitude, converting to certified organic practices. He crafts intense, site-specific wines from indigenous varieties: Refošk (his “King” status for robust, mineral reds with black fruit, herbs, and firm tannins) and Malvazija Istriana (skin-contact whites showing amber hues, orange zest, and spice). Low-intervention methods—indigenous yeasts, long macerations, neutral oak/concrete aging, minimal SO₂—yield structured, age-worthy bottles (~20,000 annually) expressing Istria’s maritime terroir. A free-spirited motorcyclist and family man, Uroš blends ancestral techniques with modern insight, earning acclaim as Slovenian Istria’s Refošk master.
