Christoph Hoch: Innovator in Biodynamic Winemaking

Christoph Hoch, a twelfth-generation winemaker from Hollenburg in Austria's Kremstal region, has gained recognition for his innovative and uncompromising approach to natural winemaking. His family's winemaking roots date back to 1640, and in 2013, Christoph ventured independently, cultivating his own biodynamic vineyards certified by Demeter.

Biodynamic Practices and Unique Terroir
Christoph's vineyards are situated on the south side of the Danube, on soils rich in Hollenburger conglomerate—a mix of chalk and river stones. This soil composition, similar to that found in Champagne, inspired him to focus on sparkling wines. His biodynamic methods include planting mustard, rye, and phacelia to enrich the soil naturally, promoting vine health and minimizing the need for artificial interventions. Christoph also makes his own compost and works closely with the wine school in Krems to teach biodynamic farming techniques.
