Mythopia: A Symphony of Biodiversity and Natural Winemaking
Mythopia, nestled in the picturesque Swiss Alps near the small town of Arbaz, is a visionary winery founded by Romaine and Hans-Peter Schmidt. Established with a mission to transform barren vineyards into thriving, biodiverse ecosystems, Mythopia is a testament to the power of nature and sustainable agriculture.
A Commitment to Biodiversity
From its inception, Mythopia has rejected the use of synthetic herbicides and pesticides. Instead, the Schmidts have planted trees, flowers, and various plants, installed beehives, and created habitats for lizards and other wildlife. This dedication to increasing biodiversity and reactivating the soil has created a balanced terroir that enhances the quality and aroma of their grapes. Their vineyards, situated at an altitude of 800 meters, primarily grow Pinot Noir, Chasselas, Sylvaner.
Natural Winemaking Philosophy
In the winery, Mythopia follows a philosophy of minimal intervention. Their wines undergo long aging in barrels, allowing the natural flavors and characteristics of the grapes to shine. This approach results in wines with rare purity and expressiveness, reflecting the unique terroir of Valais. The Schmidts’ method of "wines made from grapes and air" is a cornerstone of their production, emphasizing the natural elements involved in winemaking.
Innovative and Influential
Hans-Peter Schmidt's extensive knowledge of viticulture and environmental science has led him to collaborate with prestigious universities and participate in various trials. His work at Mythopia is not only about producing exceptional wines but also about advancing sustainable agricultural practices. This commitment has made Mythopia a reference point in the natural wine movement, inspiring winemakers worldwide.
