Pépin
Alsace, France
The Genesis of a Natural Wine Pioneer
In the picturesque vineyards of Scherwiller, Alsace, a unique microcosm thrives under the stewardship of Yves Dietrich and his sons, Pierre and Jean, who have together cultivated a legacy of innovation and excellence at Pépin. Since taking over the family business in 1991, Yves initiated a transformative journey from conventional to organic in 1999, and by 2003, boldly embraced biodynamic practices. This dedication to sustainable viticulture laid the groundwork for Pépin, a collaborative venture that brings together the Dietrich family of Domaine Achillée and the enological expertise of Xavier Couturier and Pierre Sanchez of Duo Oenologie.
Collaboration and Craftsmanship
Pépin stands out by partnering with 15 independent growers across France to produce a distinctive lineup of red, white, rosé, and orange wines, available year-round. Each cuvée, crafted from hand-harvested, organically or biodynamically farmed grapes, showcases the purity of natural winemaking. Vinification relies solely on indigenous yeasts without any additives, ensuring the wines' integrity and flavor profile remain uncompromised. While blends may vary with each release, Pépin's goal is to maintain a consistent taste that reflects their natural winemaking philosophy.
A Vision for the Future
As a testament to the collaborative spirit of Alsace's winemaking community, Pépin not only serves as a platform for producing exceptional natural wines but also as an incubator for the next generation of natural winemakers. This burgeoning project, a "sidekick" to the renowned Domaine Achillée, leverages grapes sourced from eco-friendly winemakers in Alsace and beyond, offering an affordable entry point into the world of natural wines. Pépin's approach is a beacon for innovation, sustainability, and the shared joy of winemaking, promising to shape the future of natural wines on a global scale.
